Medical Devices Forum – October 2016

Standards Australia

Standards Australia has collaborated with the Medical Technology Association of
Australia to facilitate a discussion on international standards in the area of medical
devices.

In line with our mission to develop contemporary, internationally‐aligned Standards and
our commitment to simplifying our processes (making things Simpler | Faster | Better
for our stakeholders), we have taken steps to streamline identical (direct text) adoption
of international standards.

Standards Australia will now accept and assess proposals for identical adoptions of
international standards at any time throughout the year, even outside of our twiceyearly
Project Prioritisation Rounds. This only applies to identical adoptions without
modifications to the text. Proposals to adopt international standards with modifications
will have to go through the Project Prioritisation process.

All proposals will still be assessed against the criteria of net benefit and stakeholder
support. Further information may be found on the “Proposing a Project” page on our
website.

Loan Surgical Instruments Survey

Dayane Costa is a PhD student at Macquarie Uni in NSW they are conducting a survey of ‘Loan Surgical Instruments’ and require our assistant to help collate the information.

This may have some advantages for our industry for when receiving, processing and despatching loans sets. Please take a moment to participate in this survey.

You are invited to participate in a study investigating protocols associated with supply of heat resistant surgical instruments used in orthopaedic surgery. As orthopaedic instruments are very expensive, many surgeries are conducted using loaner instruments.

The purpose of the study is to determine the role companies play in supply and reprocessing of loaner orthopaedic instruments. We aim to evaluate the processes your company is involved in when loaning surgical instruments used in orthopedic implant surgeries to hospitals. We will determine the process of inputs and outputs and quality control used by your company when reprocessing instruments and supplying them to hospitals. If you decide to participate, you will be required to fill out a questionnaire which asks questions on the input and output flow of instruments.
